About The Artist
Katherine Sands
My life is characterized by an abiding interest in all things pertaining to needlework and craft. As a child I learned hand embroidery, then began to use the sewing machine to make clothes and other items. Another interest was painting. I won a first place award for a watercolor painting of Davy Jones of the Monkees when I was 11 or so. There were sewing projects in 4-H and high school home ec classes. Later I learned crochet and counted cross stitch.
In 1994 I took up the art of layering and stitching known as quilting, learning the basics, then going on to machine quilting with the goal of becoming “good” at it. In 2001, with a desire to learn to dye fabric, I took a class to learn the basics. That class has led me into the next and biggest phase of my creative life as I have since been on a continual quest to learn and utilize all techniques to create cloth with a goal of working wholecloth or almost wholecloth with paints and dyes.
